The sanctuary and is an excellent example of the cutting edge of modern architecture, circa 1960. Two huge pillars support the free form hyperbolic parabola roof of reinforced cement, one on each side. The parabolic arch is reminiscent of Eero Saarinen’s TWA terminal at Idlewild Airport commissioned in 1956, opened in 1962,placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, and long considered one of the era’s great architectural masterpieces. The sanctuary is surrounded by glass on all sides, a unique adhesive-bond stained-glass masterpiece which depicts the four seasons in the High Sierra in a cubist collage demonstrating the modern movement in stained glass, of which Coventry Cathedral represents the epitome. The vaulted roof over the altar frames Poulsen’s Peak, named for the founder of Squaw Valley, providing those inside with the inspiration of the magnificence of God's creation, both within and without. |
